  soulful house

Soulful House? I suppose now we’ve been into House music for over 15 years and it has so many diverse connotations we do need categories. But in 1987 when I first heard this captivating, repetitive beat from across the Atlantic it was all soulful. It had to have soul because House was (and is) ‘A FEELING’ and that feeling comes from deep down in the soul. Back then the man was Tony Humphries. Friends in New York taped his show every week and I literally jumped on the postman before he opened the gate to get a fresh dose of the amazing tunes he’d spin. It wasn’t long before Tony’s tapes weren’t enough and my friends and I had to have the vinyl ourselves. Frankie Knuckles, Ten City, Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, labels like Strictly Rhythm & Nu Groove. The former became our heroes, whilst all of it inspired us. We wanted to mix like them and play the music they played. We wanted to run our own clubs and start our own labels dedicated to this sound. The first record that really shook up the UK was Big Fun by Inner City. When that charted in 1988 it was obvious this thing was going to be huge and it fuelled our passion even more. As the years went by I went on many a tangent as did the music, but I always came back to what was for me the root and that’s what I hope you’ll hear on the CD your holding. Well actually I hope the CD’s in the player and your holding the sleeve because the music needs to be heard. It can convey any emotion, lift any spirit and open any heart. So as I said earlier you can call it House, or Soulful House or whatever you want really but just make sure your experiencing that feeling! Show
